CCR Script Finishing Up

I was able to finish the rest of my CCR script:
  •  How did your production skills develop throughout this project? 

"When I started creating my magazine, I was completely lost. I was told not to use any templates, which I tend to depend on heavily through Canva. My familiarity with Canva was helpful, but I am not well-versed in graphic design. My table of contents started off extremely plain and unprofessional. It was uninteresting and messy.

I decided that I would have to do more research to get my table of contents right. I took inspiration from all sorts of magazines, deciding on splitting my table of contents into three sections, like in this table of contents from Woman’s World.

I also noticed that the table of contents in most magazines were a lot more condensed, and some of them had descriptions of each article. Most of them also had images with a page number on each image to indicate what article the picture pertained to:

I’m super happy with how it turned out, especially considering how I started off. 

 

I especially struggled with my “What’s in My Bag?” article, as it relied more on images and layout than text. Writing is a lot easier for me than graphic design, so I wasn’t really sure how to organize this page. Picture 

I had to figure out how to separate each girl’s bag contents without making the article too cluttered. Ultimately, I was able to join two circles on each side of the page to form little cloud-like bubbles to organize the page. I also had to take a few pictures for this page, like the Ella section. I originally wanted this to be a two-page spread, but I felt I didn’t have enough examples to fill up to pages."

  • How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project? 

"In terms of technology, I used Canva, which I found incredibly useful. I did not use any of their templates, but the wide range of fonts and ease of design and placement really helped me make this magazine my own. For any pictures I just used my iPhone camera. I also used Libby, an online library source, to find many example magazines for free.  

I was a little bit limited in terms of graphic design because I didn’t have a digital drawing tool. I was really set on adding drawings to my magazine. I even sketched out some ideas.

However, without an iPad it just wasn’t really working out. I could’ve printed my magazine and draw directly on it, but then I would’ve had to submit my magazine as pictures of a printed version, which didn’t look as clean, especially since my style is very sketchy and would’ve come out faded if I photocopied it.

My digital and physical format of the magazine helped me appeal to my audience especially through the use of links and screenshots as to where to find items in my “What’s in My Bag?” article. Canva’s ease of placement of text and images also helped me organize my magazine and make it a lot more digestible and pleasing to look at. "

Editor's Note Further Editing

I noticed some slight errors in my editor's note and some wording that I could change. I also looked at a reference editor's letter from Women's Health and noticed that there was a lot more depth to the graphics and organization of the page. My edited text: I have to start thinking about pictures to take/include in my magazine. I think that the pictures on the editor's note should be gym/fitness related pictures of me, as this is a fitness magazine. I wanted to add a signature, but this actually proved challenging. I don't have a tablet or stylus, but I do have a touchscreen laptop. I was able to find a pen with a silicone stylus at the end, but it was still hard to write with since my laptop cannot be folded down. I tried using the Canva draw tool, but it kept weirdly lining the signatures I made. I decided to screenshot a blank piece of the page and then screenshotting it and using Microsoft's screenshot markup tool, which was much more effective. I really wan...

Paddington (2014) Case Study

    I was given an assignment on developing a case study. The movie I selected for my case study is Paddington (2014). I have included the information for each bullet point under each example. Paddington himself is a visual effect because he is digitally animated and placed into the film , using motion capture where actors wearing suits dotted with markers. In fact, s ome of the physical interactions Paddington has with other characters are done with hidden assistants behind the camera th at make contact w ith the characters using spoons or tools that Paddington can easily be edited over to make it look li ke h e's on screen.        The opening of the film has a TV -broadcasting introduction with a black-and-white, crackly filter over it to make it look vintage. Table of Contents Editing

I have made several changes to my table of contents. My original table of contents looked like this: It looked pretty unprofessional, and I had to get to the bottom of how to fix it. In the examples above, the titles are a lot smaller and much more dynamic. The color was also very bland and beige. The titles were also very boring and didn't grab attention. One example I found of a table of contents from an issue of Women's Health put the title of the article in bold with a description underneath, which I thought was a good idea: I also found an issue of Woman's World, which separated the content of the magazine into subcategories, which I think makes the content more digestible and organized. Therefore, I decided to separate my content into subcategories too. I chose the categories Nutrition, Workouts & Fitness, and Lifestyle.
