Making the Perfect Shot
This is a shot I took considering decor/props, setting, lighting, open/closed framing, hair/makeup/costume, and blocking. I wanted to create a cozy atmosphere, using props like a lit candle, and shades of brown and beige in the books and chess board. I wanted to create an intimate feel, but not stifling. To accomplish this, I closed the blinds and used an intimate, closed frame. The scene is framed by a bookshelf on either side of the table, with a shaded window also serving to close off the frame. I used the plant as a prop to add a lighter color and make the atmosphere seem less intense. I placed my cat next to the chess board to give the impression that the other player has just moved and it's now his turn. This adds an element of storytelling to the shot. I was unable to manipulate the hair, makeup, or costume of the subject, but his eyes match the yellow tones of the surroundings.
